Housing, Housing, Housing!
In October, we are looking forward to all things housing! As you know, Mayor Muriel Bowser set a bold goal to deliver 36,000 housing units by the year 2025 - and The Housing Framework for Equity and Growth, an in-depth housing systems analysis, to ensure all residents can access and afford housing across all areas of the city, is the Office of Planning and the Department of Housing and Community Development's response to Mayor Bowser’s call to action. The Office of Planning will define “fair share targets” for housing, including for creating new affordable housing and preserving what's already there. Check out more on that here. We will be highlighting progress on the goal with a "DC Housing Week" beginning Tuesday, October 15. Be on the lookout for more details on events!
“In order to meet our growing housing needs and take on the forces of displacement, we need to be bold and implement an all eight wards strategy,” said Mayor Bowser. “When people have access to safe and stable housing, that is the first step toward having access to a safe and stable life. This order lays out how we will take a citywide approach to a citywide challenge— building on the historic investments we’ve already made and calling on everyone in our community to be part of the solution.”
ICYMI: DMPED recently launched the DC Housing Data Blog to build a stronger shared understanding of housing data in the District. The blog provides analysis on housing in the District, as well as on the many factors that influence housing, such as employment, the economy, and business development. Check out the blog posts here.
We also conducted a survey of residents' housing and moving experiences to gain an improved understanding of people's attitudes toward their current housing, the reasons that motivate them to move, and their desired housing characteristics. The results of the survey can be found here.
